Iran burnt about three tons of drugs in Tehran on Monday, Islamic Republic of Iran Police News Centre reported.
"In today's ceremony, more than three tons of drugs, which are not used as medicine, is to be annihilated," Tehran's Police Chief, Brigadier General Aziz-allah Rajab-Zadeh told reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony for burning out the drugs.
"From the beginning of the ( current Iranian) year (starting from March 21, 2008) until now, 28 tons of drugs have been seized in the province of Tehran, which shows 90 per cent of increase in comparison to that of the previous year," Rajab-Zadeh said.
Reportedly, the annihilated drugs on Monday belonged only to the seized drugs in Tehran province.
Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi-Moqaddam announced last Wednesday that Iran has enhanced its capacity of controlling drugs in the border areas.
According to a statement released by the Information and Media Communication Centre of the police late February, Iran had seized some 375 tons of narcotics in the past eight months and spent over 600 million dollars in the past two years to dig canals, build barriers and install barbed wire to seal off the borders.
Iran lies at the crossroads of drug smuggling from Afghanistan in its Eastern borders to the West and has already been struggling in battles against drug trafficking as well as drug abuse.
