Osahene Kwaku Aterkyi, Omanhene of Kukuom Traditional Area in Asunafo South District of Brong Ahafo Region has urged traditional rulers not to be content with durbars and sitting in state to receive homage but use their positions to spearhead the development of their areas.
"Chieftaincy is not only about durbars and sitting in state to receive homage. Chiefs must use their positions to spearhead the development of their areas," he said.
Osahene Aterkyi who is also President of Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, addressing members of Kukuom Traditional Council, called for effective collaboration and co-operation between traditional authorities and district assemblies for the successful implementation of government policies and programmes.
He regretted that chieftaincy, which should be "a catalyst for development", was rather becoming an institution retarding progress as a result of disputes.
Osahene Aterkyi said to ensure peace, unity and development of the traditional area, the council had established reconciliation, finance, investigation and environmental committees.
He appealed to investors to approach the council for land to establish industries to create jobs for the unemployed youth.
Osahene Aterkyi announced that the council had banned expensive funeral celebrations in the area with immediate effect.
