Alhaji Yakubu Ayana, a Tamale-based philanthropist on Saturday organised a massive clean-up exercise in the metropolis.
He led the residents including Naa Mohammed Alhassan Dawuni, Chief of Tamale (Dakpema) for the six-hour exercise to clean choked gutters around Tamale Teaching Hospital, West Hospital, Central Hospital and Chagli suburb, as part of President John Evans Atta Mills' campaign to clean Ghana.
Members of some voluntary organisations including National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross Society, youth groups and NDC activists and sympathisers participated in the exercise.
Addressing the media after the exercise, Alhaji Ayana said, though President Atta Mills' 100 days in office target of clean Ghana campaign was over, Ghanaians had to cultivate the habit of cleaning their environment to avoid diseases.
He said Ghana could boast of healthy people when her environment was clean and appealed to Ghanaians to organise massive clean-up exercises in their communities regularly.
Naa Dawuni, appealed to Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to enforce environmental laws to prosecute offenders.
Alhaji Abduali Haruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive-designate advised the residents to ensure clean environment and pledged to help clean the metropolis.
