The Nkawie Circuit Court has remanded Joe Amoako, a mason of Atwima Koforidua into prison custody for allegedly biting off one ear of Afia Nyarko, a trader.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and will re-appear on April 23, 2009.
Detective Sergeant Peasah Birinkorang, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr Jerome Noble Nkrumah that both the complainant and accused lived in the same neighbourhood at Atwima Koforidua in the Atwima Nwabiagya District.
According to the prosecution, thieves had in recent times terrorised the residents and they therefore decided to organize themselves to buy street bulbs for the area.
The prosecution said an amount of GH¢25 was realized from the contribution and the money was given to the accused to add his contribution to it and buy the bulbs.
He said after some weeks, since the bulbs were not forthcoming, the husband of the complainant confronted the accused but he could not give any reasons for not buying the bulbs.
A few days later, the prosecution said, Afia Nyarko's husband asked her to go to the accused to demand the money.
According to the prosecution, Afia Nyarko went to the accused's house the next day but when she asked for the refund of the money, this resulted in heated exchanges and in the process, the accused pounced on her and bit off her left ear.
A report was made to the Abuakwa police and after preliminary investigations, he was charged with the offence.
