The Agona Swedru Circuit Court has fined a hit-and-run driver from Kasoa to GH¢1, 250.00 for inconsiderate driving, reckless driving and failing to report an accident to the police.
Kwesi Opoku, driver of Tipper Truck Number GW7673W, pleaded guilty and would serve three years imprisonment in hard labour if he fails to pay the fine.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Kwame Akannah, told the Court presided over by Mr N. K. E. Osam, that on July 3, 2008, the accused was returning from Accra towards Gomoa Budumburam.
The prosecution said on reaching the Kasoa-Bawjiase junction, he veered off his lane and crashed into a KIA Pride Taxi Cab with registration Number GE 7535Y, who was coming from the opposite side of the road, killing its driver, Mr Seth Osabutey instantly.
Chief Inspector Akannah said Opoku also crashed into a Daewoo Tico Taxi Cab with registration Number GW9947W, two KIA Pride Taxis with the numbers GW3962M and GR4076Y, which had parked in the lane. He also destroyed two traffic lights.
The prosecution said after the incidence, Opoku failed to report to the police but was arrested by the Kasoa Police at his hide out at Kasoa on July 6 2008 and remanded in prison custody at Winneba, while the document was forwarded to the Attorney General's Department Office for advice.
He said on March, 16, 2009, the Law Office directed that the accused person be charged before the court with the offences.
