A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced Kofi Adu, a 22 year-old labourer to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing quantities of Indian hemp and fire arms without authority.
Adu pleaded not guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Philip Bebli told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that the complainant was a security guard at Kejetia while Adu is a labourer at Nkronza Ampabame near Santasi in Kumasi.
He said on December 19, last year, Adu and an accomplice now at large, left their personal belongings in the care of the complainant.
The prosecution said four days later, Adu and his accomplice went to the complainant with a sack of yam to take away their luggage deposited with him.
He said the complainant demanded some money for keeping their luggage, but they could not give him money and instead offered him some tubers of yam.
The prosecution said when the sack was untied to take the yams, the complainant found 410 grammes of some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp hidden in the yams together with a locally-manufactured pistol and a live ammunition concealed in a black polythene bag.
He said the complainant arrested Adu but his accomplice managed to escape and together with the exhibits were sent to Kejetia Police Station and after investigations charged with the offence.
