A 25-year old mason, Gabriel Komlatse has been convicted by a Hohoe Circuit Court presided over by Mr Edward Apenkwa to a 12-month jail term in hard labour for his inability to raise a fine of 600 Ghana Cedis imposed on him for misconduct.
Komlatse's plea of guilty with explanation, which he attributed to hunger, failed to convince the court and he was convicted for unlawful entry and stealing quantities of maize, rice and beans valued at 250 Ghana cedis.
Police Inspector Emmanuel Kpodo, prosecuting, said Komlatse under the cover of darkness broke into the Kiosk of Madam Vivian Borblorbu in Hohoe, where foodstuffs were kept and made away with the items.
He said a tip-off led to the arrest of the convict and when his abode was searched the missing items were recovered. He then confessed his crime explaining persistent hunger forced him to steal.
In a related development, Mawuli Kwasi Agbozo alias Nkwantabisa, an electrician at New Ayoma in the Hohoe Municipality has been sentenced to a fine of 200 Ghana cedis for assaulting Cletus Agorti Appah.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a fine of 200 Ghana cedis or serve nine months in jail in default.
The Court further ordered the convict to pay compensation of 150 Ghana cedis to complainant.
Police Chief Inspector Samuel Gbedemah told the court that Agbozo assaulted Appah at a funeral on the premise that he (complainant) was disturbing and making unnecessary noise.
He said Agbozo also lifted Appah up and hit him on the ground heavily resulting in injuries and bleeding from his anus.
Mr Gbedemah said Appah was referred to the Hohoe Municipal Hospital after treatment at the Community Health Centre.
He said a report was made to the Police leading to the arrest and prosecution of convict.
