Very Reverend Dr Emmanuel K. Marfo, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Methodist University College, Wenchi campus, has urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, to take up entrepreneurship to enhance their living standards.
He said this would support the government's decision to solve the unemployment problem in the country.
Dr Marfo was addressing National Service Personnel, who served in Wenchi Municipality, during the 2008/2009 service year on Friday at the launch of their service week.
He noted that most of the service personnel usually targeted a particular job after their service and would not like to enter into any other field if they failed to get the job of their choice.
"As a result some of them even describe themselves as unemployed if they find themselves at a place not of their choice", he added.
The dean advised the personnel to inculcate the habit of entrepreneurship and not to stay at home after their service waiting for jobs.
Dr Marfo said "sometimes an individual's private business income may be higher than what a worker at the government sector earns and entering into their own private businesses would help improve their skills and experience".
He stressed that the youth could successfully open up their own businesses by acquiring the requisite skills and training in the particular business sector and this could be obtained through workshops and seminars.
He, therefore, called on the government, NGOs, churches and individuals to support the youth, who wished to set up their own businesses, but lacked the needed resources to do that.
