The Dean of Students Affairs of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Dr. Ernest Awanta has called for peaceful co-existence among religious groups for accelerated national development.
He said without honesty, stability and religious tolerance, the nation cannot develop.
Dr. Awanta was speaking at an Eid-ul-Fitr get-together for fresh members of the Ghana Muslims Students Association (GMSA), of the UEW in Winneba.
The occasion which was on the theme: "Peaceful Co-existence for Nation Building-The Role of Religious Bodies on campus," marked the end of a successful Ramadan among the Muslim community.
Dr. Awanta noted the pivotal role the various religions play in the development of society and asked the followers to see themselves as one.
He reiterated the need for government to establish a national council for inter-religious dialogue to deal with emerging inter and intra religious conflicts.
Dr. Awanta commended Muslims and Christians on campus for their peaceful co-existence.
The Dean of Students Affairs advised the Muslim fraternity to strive to avoid acts that would tarnish the reputation of Islam.
The Zongo Chief of Winneba, Alhaji Suley Salaga appealed to factions in the Dagbon and Bawku conflicts to lay down their weapons and consider themselves as brothers and sisters.
The Head of Information, Communication and Technology Department of the UEW, Dr. Issifu Yidana who Chaired the function, called on Muslims to continue to deepen the peaceful co-existence among religious groups on campus and the nation at large.
The Executive Director of the Centre for Literacy Empowerment, a Wa-based non-governmental organisation, and a retired Senior Lecturer at UEW, Mr. Abdulai Jakalia advised the students to carry out regular medical check-ups to boost their health and live long.
