The TDC Ghana Ltd has announced plans for what will become the largest and most multifunctional event centre in Tema, marking a major step in the company’s vision to modernise the city as it prepares for a redevelopment drive starting next year.
This was revealed by the Managing Director of TDC Ghana, Courage Nunekpeku, during a short ceremony last Friday to inaugurate four new service offerings: a business centre, a revamped corporate website, a comprehensive service catalogue and a refurbished staff canteen.
Mr Nunekpeku described the proposed event centre as a one-stop, highly flexible facility designed to meet the evolving needs of residents, businesses, corporate institutions and faith-based organisations in Tema.
He said the proposed complex will include convertible event and office spaces, church and meeting areas, basketball and tennis courts, a children’s park, a gym, a modern washing bay and small rental units that can be booked by the hour.
The architectural and structural drawings, he revealed, are already completed, awaiting procurement processes.
“We don’t have anything like that in Tema. We have the space and we have to be creative and innovative enough to make these facilities available, especially as we embark on the massive redevelopment of Tema starting next year.”
Earlier in the day, TDC inaugurated four internal facilities to improve efficiency, generate revenue, and enhance staff welfare. These include a new business centre at the corporation’s head office, a modernised corporate website, a visual and content-rich corporate catalogue and a staff canteen restored to its original purpose after years of non-use.
Mr Nunekpeku explained that a simple principle inspired these interventions: identify everyday problems and address them quickly.
He noted that clients regularly arrived at the TDC premises in need of photocopying, printing, passport-sized photographs, or Commissioner of Oath services — only to be redirected outside the premises before returning to complete their transactions.
He said the business centre was expected to generate revenue, while providing convenient services to clients and the general public.
Mr Nunekpeku said under the new canteen arrangement, workers would purchase food coupons at a 50 per cent discount, with the company absorbing the remaining cost, adding that public users would, however, pay full price.
The Board Chairman of the TDC Ghana Ltd., Isaac Ashai Odamtten, who inaugurated the facilities, praised management for implementing what he described as essential, overdue additions to the corporation’s operations.
He said the catalogue, business centre, website and canteen were not luxury projects but strategic tools that supported the TDC’s mandate as a housing, planning and development authority.
“When you have staff who commit themselves to work, you must also look at what is essential for them.”
He said the revamped website would serve both local and global clients, offering interactive, up-to-date information on the TDC’s services, ongoing projects and investment opportunities.
The new catalogue will act as a quick reference resource for potential investors and prospective clients.
Mr Odamtten expressed confidence that the new facilities would remain sustainable. He urged management to continue improving service delivery as the corporation expands its housing and development footprint nationwide.
