As part of the country’s 60th independence anniversary celebration, 700 selected school children, cadet corps, voluntary organisations, “Made in Ghana” craftsmen and party affiliates from the West Akim Municipality marked the day with a march past.
The smart turn out of the contingents on parade, the uniformity displayed and the mental alertness which enabled them to keep to each command were a delight to watch, while the cadet corps treated spectators to a superb drill.
The Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Madam Elizabeth Ampaw Deletsa, was flanked by the Director of Education, the Divisional Commander of Police and the Municipal Fire Officer to review the parade.
Madam Ampaw Deletsa delivered a speech on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with a call on Ghanaians to protect the environment. “The dense forests, that were home to varied trees, plants and fauna, have largely disappeared”, she noted, adding that, the rivers and lakes were disappearing and those that still exist are all polluted.”
In a speech to commemorate the occasion, Madam Rebecca Ayisah, West Akim Municipal Director of Education, commended the pupils and the students for the enthusiasm they displayed and noting ‘The parade is one paramount avenue of grooming a new generation of future leaders for the country”.
The Education Director called on opinion and religious leaders, politicians, traditional rulers, teachers, parents and guardians to put aside all differences, in order to join forces with government for the transformation of the country, especially in the areas of education.
Madam Rebecca Ayisah expressed worry about the poor educational performance of the municipality and urged all and sundry to help redeem the falling standards of education.
