Burkina Faso is banning imports from North Korea to comply with UN sanctions, the AFP news agency quotes the government as saying.

The UN measures were passed in September to restrict oil imports and ban textile exports - an attempt to starve North Korea of fuel and income for its weapons programmes.

But an inquiry in October by the US - which has been pushing for tougher sanctions - found that Burkina Faso was still trading with North Korea.

AFP quotes Burkinabe Foreign Minister Alpha Barry as saying: Following this inquiry, we conducted a thorough investigation... and found that there were economic operators importing from North Korea.

Instructions have been give to the two ministries to end these importations."

Officials figures show the West African country imports from North Korean, which were mainly petroleum products, amounted to about $6.8m (£5m) in 2016, AFP reports.
