The Sunyani Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) is to mount platforms for candidates in the Municipality vying for the district level election slated for Tuesday, December 17 this year.
The programme will offer candidates opportunity to present themselves and their campaign messages to the electorate. Electoral officials will monitor and supervise the programme to introduce candidates to the electorate and control proceedings at periods yet to be fixed by the Commission.
Out of 111 candidates, only eight females are contesting for the district level elections for the 34 electoral areas in the municipality out of which 21 did not contest for the unit committee position because candidates were less than five, with only 13 electoral areas having more than five candidates vying for membership of unit committees.
Yaw Badu Amaniampong, the Sunyani West Returning Officer of the EC, explained that out of the 34 electoral areas, constitutionally if the candidates were above five, then there must be an election but they are less than five and there will not be an election in those areas.
He mentioned Mireku, Akuoku, Kuotokrom, New Dormaa East, Atronie, Yawsae, Antwikrom/Benue Nkwanta, Atuahenekrom, Zongo, Asufufu/Watchman, Penkwase East, Penkwase West and Yawhimakrom as the Electoral Areas.
Mr Amaniampong noted that the backgrounds of the candidates occupationally were self-employees, teachers, farmers, masons and carpenters and urged the electorate to ask candidates questions, particularly, those contesting for the second time to talk about their achievements and what they intended to do to improve the lives of the citizenry in their respective electoral areas.
