The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has called for an end to the controversy surrounding Sammy Gyamfi’s widely criticised dollar gift to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, following Gyamfi’s public apology.
Tamakloe noted that Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, had taken full responsibility for his actions and urged Ghanaians to accept his apology and move on.
Gyamfi has faced intense public backlash after a viral video showed him handing dollar notes to Nana Agradaa at a public event. The incident sparked concerns about the display of opulence, particularly given the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
In response to the uproar, Gyamfi issued a public apology, expressing regret and acknowledging the act as a lapse in judgment.
Mr. Tamakloe, speaking during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 13, said the apology was the appropriate step and should bring the matter to a close.
“Graciously, my friend and brother, Sammy Gyamfi, less than 24 hours, when this incident became public, he thought it wise to apologise to the good people of this country and H.E. President John Dramani Mahama as well. I think that is the right thing to do,” Tamakloe said.
“He has apologised in his write-up, I think it should bring finality to the matter. I think that should suffice.”
While stressing that the apology does not excuse the behaviour, Tamakloe said it reflects a recognition of public concern and shows contrition.
“Having apologised for the issue provides no justification whatsoever. I think that spirit, that remorseful spirit, should assuage whatever anger or the sensibilities of our people,” he added.
