Nigeria on Sunday smashed South
Africa 3-0 and came onto the top in badminton team event of the
ninth All-Africa Games, making revenge for a home defeat four
years ago in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
In the women's singles, Kubi Grace Daniel, an African champion,
scored a 2-0 win over South Africa's Stacey Doubell.
In the men's singles, Jimkam Bulus defeated his rival Abraham
Willem Viljoen 2-1. While in the women's doubles, Nigeria's Daniel
teamed up with Susan Ideh and managed to overrun their rivals,
Chantelle Botts and Michelle Edwards.
Nigeria had reached the medal playoff earlier in the day after
taking a 3-0 easy win over host Algeria in the semi-final. South
Africa, on the other hand, had made a narrow 3-2 win over
Seychelles in the semi-final.
Algeria and Seychelles, which also collected the bronze medal
in 2003 in Abuja, shared the bronze medal.
Four years ago at the eighth edition of the All-Africa Games,
South Africa beat host Nigeria in the final and went home with the
team gold.
This is the second time that badminton is represented at the
All-Africa Games after it was introduced at the 2003 tournament.
The individual badminton events of the ongoing Games are due to
be started on Tuesday.
