Rohingya refugees in refugee camp in southern Thailand have gone on hunger strike to demand for improvement in the meals provided by Thai authorities, Bangkok Post reported.
An interpreter said that the refugees are demanding the Thai authority to coordinate with the United Nations in helping them seek asylum in another country. They refused to return to Myanmar because they feared for their safety.
Many of them complained that the 2.5 U.S. dollars allocated per person for a day's meal is not enough. They want quality food in larger portions. About 120 Rohingya men have been transferred from southern Phang Nga province to a detention facility run by immigration police in Muang district of southern Prachuap Khiri Khan province, awaiting their deportation.
Disease control officials also gave them physical check-ups with help from Myanmar interpreters. The Muslim refugees will remain at the facility until otherwise ordered, according to the authority.
