Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, on Wednesday said good governance and unity were ideal for Africa's development.
"Until Africans begin to break territorial barriers, respect various protocols and treaties, they cannot develop. We must start from the simple premise that Africa's future is up to Africans", he said.
Mr. Mensah made the observation at a five-day workshop organised by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) in Accra for workers of Bolore and Maersk network in West Africa Affiliates of ITF.
Organised under the theme: "Social Dialogue and Collective Bargaining", it was attended by delegates from Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameron, Cote D'Ivoire, Nigeria, Senegal Sierra Leone and Togo.
Mr. Emmanuel Mensah, Coordinating Secretary of National Coordinating Committee of ITF Ghana Chapter, said the workshop was to assess progress in the implementation of the Lome 2009 Plan of Actions and building West Africa Maersk and Bolore network.
He said participants would develop effective and efficient skills on social dialogue including labour rights, the right to social security benefit, right to quality and secured jobs.
Mr. Mensah said the workshop would also help sharpen their skills as labour and industrial relations practitioners to meet the emerging challenges in the industry and promote regional integration.
He noted that employees of multinational companies worked hard to help the growth of the companies but often did not receive the required incentive package as well as wages to compensate their efforts.
"Quite often, employees become vulnerable as these industry giants sometimes blatantly refuse to negotiate for better terms of condition of service".
"Another area that they become defenceless include skills development, capacity building, policy intervention and collective bargaining," he said.
