The Voters' Registration Exercise took off without any incident at some centres in the Tema East Constituency on Friday.
Prospective voters, aged 18 years and above, who were unable to register in 2008, called at the centres on the commencement of the exercise which would end on June 20.
At about 1100 hours when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Teachers Resource Centre which is catering for the Ashiboye Electoral Area, eight people had been registered, while about 30 people were waiting patiently in a queue.
Mr Michael Kumi, officer-in-charge of the Centre, said all the four officials including the camera man, were at post by 0700 hours when the
exercise commenced.
Mr Kumi indicated that the process was, however, slow due to the numerous questions prospective voters had to answer.
He added that after registering, the taking of pictures and the lamination of identity cards were done at the premises of the Public Works Department, which is located a few meters from the Centre, due to the non-availability of electricity at the Centre.
Apart from a representative from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), there were no polling agents of the other Political Parties to monitor the exercise at the Centre.
About 50 people were seen in a queue at the Oninku Drive One and Two Junior High School Centres, while a few others who had lost their voters' identity cards were looking through the check list and the voters' register at about
1210 hours.
At the time of the visit, all the officials were present at the Centre which caters for all the Polling Stations at the Kwesi Plange Electoral
Area.
Polling agents from the NPP and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) were present at the Centre.
A few of the prospective voters complained about the lack of chairs for them to sit and the slow pace of the exercise resulting in their standing in the queue for long hours.
Mr Prosper Agbovi, Officer-in-charge of Photography at the Centre, said even though the Centre had been provided with a digital camera and a printing machine, there was no electricity to operate them.
He stated that the situation had been reported to the Returning Officer of the Constituency and expressed the hope that it would be improved by
Saturday.
Mr Kwasi Brobbey, Officer-in-charge of the Tema Community One Police Station Centre, said a total of 39 people had been registered as at 1250
hours without any incident.
Mr Brobbey added that the Centre which caters for 12 Polling Stations in the Padmore Electoral Area, has no logistics constraint.
He indicated that most of those registered were aged between 18 and 20 years, adding that those above 20 were unable to register during the last
exercise as they had travelled outside the country or were in school.
The polling agents of the NPP and the NDC who were at the Centre told the GNA that the exercise was smooth.
