Mr Alexis Ayamdor, Assemblyman for the Zorkor-Kanga Electoral Area in the Bongo District of Upper East Region, has observed that politicization of issues was a major problem affecting development in the country.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, the Assemblyman indicated that a lot of development projects which should have been
completed in many communities suffered delays because of political differences.
Citing his electoral area as an example, he noted that some people who claimed not to belong to the ruling party refused to participate in any
development projects, especially those that demanded communal labour.
He stressed the need for such people to disabuse their minds that their party was not in power hence they would not participate in development issues.
He explained that development projects were not meant for political parties but to benefit the people and that it was naive on the part of some
people to dissociate themselves from such projects.
Mr Ayamdor said some development projects such as the European Union Projects demanded communal labour and expressed dismay that when it came to execution of such projects some community members refused to get involved.
He complained about the non-existence of Unit Committee members and structures as demanded by the Local Government System and said the situation put much pressure on the assembly members.
He explained that duties which should have been performed by the Unit Committees were carried out by the assembly members, giving them an additional responsibility.
He therefore appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to review the Decentralization Process to make the Unit
Committee Structures functional to assist assembly members.
