The South Korean cargo ship freed from pirates in a commando operation in the Arabian Sea is expected to arrive in the northeastern Omani port of Muscat this week, its company said Sunday.
The 11,500-ton chemical carrier Samho Jewelry was initially thought to be heading to the southwestern Omani port of Salalah, but Samho Shipping Co. clarified the destination as Muscat, saying it will arrive at the port on Thursday.
It was not immediately clear why Muscat was chosen as the destination for the cargo ship, which had been seized by 13 pirates but freed when South Korean Navy commandos raided it Friday.
The operation was successful, with all 21 crew members rescued alive. The captain was wounded, but his condition is improving, company officials say. Eight of the pirates were shot dead and five caught alive.
The freighter is heading to Oman under escort of the South Korean destroyer Choi Young, which is participating in an international anti-piracy campaign in the Somali waters.
