Lucky for Japan that Senegal didn't nick a late equaliser against Colombia. But you've got to spare a thought for Senegal. They became the first team ever to be knocked out of the World Cup on yellow cards.

As for Group G, this is how it ended up. England fans would have taken this before the tournament, right?

But it was used to describe another of yesterday's group games, after Japan settled for a 1-0 defeat to Poland.

Although they were set to lose, Japan knew they would still finish second in Group H above Senegal, by virtue of their fair play record.

How much can we read into last night's performance by England? Jordan Pickford's display has left a few people worried...

Mark: That team would never start a game as an 11 again but will be put into a stronger side if needed. Vardy will always get goals but got very little service last night. My worry is Pickford. We are going to need him to step up and he looks shaky.

Ben: I hate it when England lose any game. But look at the context of last night's game. Not much between two B sides with Belgium ranked 9 places higher and no matter what the players and managers from both sides say it was simply a run-out to prepare underused players for the next round and give the starting lineups some extra rest.

Bradley Roberts: Set up to lose. Missed open goals. So obvious Southgate wanted an easier tie. Disgraceful.

Regardless of England's potential route through the knockout stage, was Gareth Southgate right to make so many changes?

He certainly thinks so...

But before this turns into a Brexit debate, let's have a look at the highlight of last night's game.

Fabian Pavez: I thought good teams are supposed to beat the big boys to be Champions. Why avoid them now and lose to them in the Final *that's IF England makes it there even.

Jools Ratcliffe: England finishing 1st or 2nd in the group. The most divisive issue we've faced since Brexit!

Gareth Southgate made eight changes from England's win against Panama, while Roberto Martinez made nine - suggesting victory wasn't exactly the top priority.

That was reflected in a fairly subdued encounter.

But then it gets tricky. The winners of that will face Brazil or Mexico, and the winners of that quarter-final will then face Uruguay, Portugal, France or Argentina in the semis.
