The Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA) and Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), would on October 12, commence the revival of the defunct boxing league at the Bukom Boxing Arena, in Accra.
The boxing league, which has been credited with unearthing former world champions like, Joseph Agbeko, George Ashie and a host of other high profile boxers in the country, went dead for several reasons.
But after nine years of absence, boxing fans are sure to be swept off their feet with the array of young talents and prospective future world champions, who would be battling in the ring in a league format for a 26 week period.
The new boxing league dubbed, "Bukom Fist of Fury" would open on Friday October 12, at the Bukom Boxing Arena Mr. Moses Foh-Amoaning, the Technical and Marketing Consultant of Bukom Fists of Fury, said his work in drawing up a plan for the competition was made simple due to the cooperation and unity that existed between the GBA and the GABF.
"They have shown that we can achieve success with togetherness," he said.
He added that, the competition was good for the future of boxing and appealed for more corporate bodies to come on board.
Mr Peter Zwennes, president of the GBA, in a media conference in Accra said everything was ready for the commencement of the league on Friday.
The competition according to Mr Zwennes, would be in three tier extravaganza including the Juvenile division, Amateur division and the Professional division with 14 clubs competing for honours.
He said the competition from its commencement date would continue every fortnight for 13 weeks, after which there would be a first round break and then the second round would follow.
Mr Zwennes said the competition was good for the development of boxing in the country, adding that, "it would provide the opportunity for young talents to showcase their skills."
Coach Ofori Asare, Ghana's National Boxing team head coach and International Boxing Association (AIBA) Instructor explained that, the scoring system for the competition and said that, each win was three points, draw with one point and no point for losers.
He said a total of 170 boxers had registered for the competition and a minimum of 22 bouts(6 juvenile, 12 amateur and 4 professional) was expected each night.
The team, to build the highest points at the end of the season would be crowned champions.
He added that all boxing bouts would observe the standard international rules in all respective divisions.
He said that, the league would give the national team coaches the chance to select good boxers into the team, adding that the individual boxers
would also benefit by being active and competitive.
Mr. George Lamptey, GABF president also noted that, the competition was a blessing for the Federation.
He said his outfit was excited about it and was positive that it would reflect in an improved performance of boxers at international tournaments.
The fight nights would also witness an entertainment package and musical interludes from high profile musicians and other celebrities.
