There seem to be injury concerns for Richard Commey, the newly crowned International Boxing Federation (IBF), champion, as he gears up for a unification bout against Vasyl Lomachenko.
Commey, who defeated Isa Chaniev to win the IBF Lightweight title is obliged by the contract to fight Lomachenko, on April 12, but there are indications that he may not be ready for the fight.
This follows a right wrist injury he sustained in the fight against the Russian last week.
Information gathered from the camp of Commey, indicates that, there was an issue with a ligament on his right hand, his right knuckle.
This was confirmed by Lou DiBella, Commey's promoter on Tuesday.
"Before there is any definitive prognosis, they want him to have an MRI and whatever other imaging they need to do.
“Richard went to see the hand specialist [on Tuesday]. The doctor sent him for imaging, which he will have done on Wednesday and on Thursday the doctor would review everything and give us a prognosis about whether he would be able to fight on April 12,” the promoter noted.
He added that "My perspective is that I'm not going to play doctor. Right now, there is an issue that has to be dealt with, and on Thursday we'll know the extent of it."
Commey’s much anticipated fight with Lomachanko, will depend heavily on the outcome of an ongoing medical examination on his wrist.
