The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Saturday, June 22, celebrated the 2019 Edition of the Olympic Day Run in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region.
The Olympic Day Run is a day set aside to promote the spirit of Olympism, unity and the importance and role of sports in creating peace and love.
The celebration, which was patronized by officials of the GOC, keep fit clubs, students, the Eastern Regional Sports Directorate, saw participants engaged in a five-kilometer health walk through some principal streets of Koforidua and was climaxed by aerobics and tree planting session.
Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah – President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), encouraged Ghanaians to engage in sporting activities on regular basis in order to be fit and healthy.
He said the GOC added tree planting exercise to the activities, as a form of importance of the environment to sports and appreciation of natural resources.
According to the GOC president, the Olympic rings represent the five continents of the world and the design, which means united by Olympism was an intellectual property owned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which Ghana is a member.
Mrs. Gifty Horsu – Fianu, Eastern Region Director of Sports who represented the National Sports Authority (NSA) expressed appreciation to the GOC for hosting the event in Koforidua.
Mr. Eric Kwakye Darfour, the Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw, who took part in the tree planting said sports had many benefits and was an avenue for changing lives.
He commended the organisers for a successful event and advised the students to take their studies and sports serious.
The 2019 Olympic Day celebration was sponsored by Toyota Ghana, Twellium Industries and Indomie.
