Abungaje outpointed Bismark Saah of Fit Square Boxing Club of Accra in a thrilling contest.

Mr Mike Sowah from the Ghana Army later presented the best boxer award of a miniature boxer in action to the promising Abungaje.

Issah Mahama blazed the trail of his Western Region counterparts by defeating his Fit Square opponent to ensure a 2-2 draw in the contest.

The side attraction included exhibition bouts involving female and juvenile boxers from Fit Square Gym.

Boxing clubs

The well-patronised event was meant to recruit boxers to form boxing clubs to participate in the novelty Western Regional Amateur Boxing League (WESTABOLG).

The occasion was graced by the president of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Mr George Lamptey, who later presented medals to Mr Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah, Western Regional Minister; and the executives of the Western Regional branch of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) for their commitment to promote amateur boxing in the region.

Mr Lamptey also commended Mr Twintoh Walker, National Chairman of the GBA Regional Outreach Committee and Central and Western Regional GBA president, for his initiative, vision and dedication to boxing promotion in the country.

The event was sponsored by the Western Regional Coordinating Council and Western Regional Sports Committee, with support from Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA), Just Maxx Travels and Lawyer Fii Buckman.

Other partners include Raybow Hotel, Takoradi Hotel, Ahenfie Hotel, Electricity Company Ghana, Ghana Air Force and Ghana Police Service.
