Beach volleyball: Ghana earns Commonwealth Games ticket

Ghana’s women's beach volleyball team have booked their place at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after beating Mauritius 2-1 in the qualifying competition at the Laboma Beach court at La, Accra.

Ghana’s pair of Rashaka Katadat and Juliana Okyerewaa reached the final of the African qualifier after defeating Kenya, The Gambia, Nigeria and South Africa en route to the showdown with Mauritius.

Kenya's female team had already qualified via their world ranking.

Ghana's men reached the semi-finals of the equivalent tournament but lost to their Gambian counterparts.

The Gambians went on to defeat South Africa in straight sets in the final.

Despite the defeat, South Africa also earned a place at the Commonwealth Games as the winner's world ranking was good enough to guarantee them a place in Birmingham.

Other teams which participated in the qualifying competition were Zambia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Beach volleyball made its Commonwealth Games debut in 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, with the hosts winning gold in the men's competition while Canada won the women's event.
