Takyi, who was Ghana’s sole medallist at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, told Graphic Sports that he had garnered a lot of experience to improve on his record in the previous Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old boxer said he was ready to put his pro career on hold to win the nation her first-ever Olympic gold medal in boxing at the Paris Games in 2024.

“I am ready and prepared to go to the Olympics again next year and this time around I’m focused on winning gold for the country.

“This is the best opportunity for me to win Ghana her maiden gold medal at the Olympics and I’m ready to put my pro career on hold to achieve that for my country,” Takyi explained.

Takyi turned professional after his heroics in Tokyo and made his debut against Kamalrudeen Boyefio in a second-round stoppage victory in April 2022.

He currently has three career wins from as many bouts and is signed under the Bazooka Promotions and Management Syndicate, an outfit owned by the legendary former WBA welterweight champion Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey.

The International Boxing Association (IBA), in 2016, approved a proposal to allow professional fighters to partake in the Olympic Games and it commenced at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

In 2020, Takyi’s run to an Olympic gold medal was ended by America’s fighter Duke Ragan who had four pro fights before competing at the Tokyo Games last year.

When asked whether his management had agreed to allow him to partake in the Olympics, Takyi said an agreement had been reached with the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) for him to compete for Ghana in Paris.

“Once my management has agreed for me to participate in the games, I don’t think there is a problem because the Olympics allow professionals to compete.”
