Former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has commended Ghana’s young national team players for their impressive performance during the Unity Cup, describing the victory over Trinidad and Tobago as a major boost to their confidence and development.
Speaking to the Graphic Sports in an interview yesterday, the former national team gaffer expressed optimism about the future of the Black Stars, praising the energy, skill and character displayed by the young players in the recent international friendlies.
“The victory against Trinidad and Tobago was good enough to lift their confidence ahead of any competitive match,” Akonnor said.
He singled out Jordan Ayew for special praise, applauding the Crystal Palace forward for showing strong leadership on the pitch, which he believes will inspire the next generation of players.
“I like the way Jordan showed great leadership on the field of play. It will give the young ones confidence in their game,” he noted.
Akonnor, who managed the Black Stars between 2020 and 2021, said he was particularly encouraged by the talent and potential of the new players.
He believes their performances show that Ghana has a solid succession plan in place for the future.
“Potentially, the young players have good talent. In some time to come, this generation will fade and it will give the coach an opportunity for replacement,” he explained.
Akonnor emphasised that while the current young players still need time and experience, their performances during the Unity Cup suggest they are capable of stepping up when the older generation exits the stage.
