Ghana’s all-conquering national armwrestling team, Golden Arms, have received another major boost as the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) reaffirmed its commitment to back the sport after their latest heroics on the continental stage.
Fresh from dominating the Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja with a jaw-dropping 55-medal haul, comprising including 26 gold, 20 silver and nine bronze, the team paid a courtesy call on NHIA Executive Management in Accra to express their gratitude for the Authority’s continued support.
NHIA Chief Executive, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, hailed the Golden Arms’ remarkable consistency, describing them as a true source of national pride.
“Everybody loves a winning team. We are proud to be associated with your success. So long as you continue to deliver, we will continue to support,” he assured.
Dr Bampoe recalled the team’s stunning exploits at the 2023 Africa Games, where they stole the show with an unmatched medal tally that left the rest of the continent trailing. He stressed that the NHIA’s backing was part of its wider commitment to support corporate Ghana and help raise armwrestling to elite sporting status.
For Charles Osei-Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), the NHIA’s partnership has been transformative, lifting the morale of the athletes as they swept the medals in Abuja.
“Once you support us, it is only fair that we return to say thank you and share the good news with you,” he told the NHIA executives.
The Golden Arms’ triumph in Nigeria has now pushed their all-time medal tally to 405, with an astonishing 67 per cent of those gold, underlining Ghana’s dominance of the sport on the continent.
Looking ahead, the team announced their participation in the World Armwrestling Championship in Bulgaria from September 10–22 , 2025, and revealed Ghana has secured hosting rights for the 2027 African Armwrestling Championship.
NHIA Deputy Chief Executive for Operations, Dr Senanu Djokoto, praised the federation’s leadership and pledged even deeper collaboration going forward.
The meeting was also attended by GAF Vice President Dr Kofi Addo-Agyekum, along with executive members Husseini Akueteh Addy and Nii Otoo Larkyne.
