Civil society organisations in the Effutu Municipality, in collaboration with the Winneba branch of the Federation of Youth Associations in Ghana, on Tuesday organised a peace walk in Winneba to sensitize the people on the need to have a peaceful election on December 7.
A large crowd, mostly the youth, went through the main streets of the town dancing to brass band music and ended at the Liberation Square where they were addressed by three parliamentary candidates contesting the election in the area.
The peace walk was under the theme "Making Election 2008 Peaceful; the Role of the Youth".
Addressing the crowd the Bishop of the Winneba Diocese of the Methodist Church, Right Rev. Kow Ghunney, urged Ghanaians to "Vote with their thumb and not with their mouth".
He appealed to the people to cast their votes quietly and avoid insults and anything that could incite passions and create confusion
Mr. Elisha Kofi Awobigah, an executive officer of the federation, emphasized the need for peace in the country during and after the election.
Mr. Awobigah urged the people especially the youth to use the same spirit and behaviour exhibited in the walk during the elections.
"It was pleasant to see all political party supporters walking together peacefully during the walk," he said.
Candidate Henry Botsie of the CPP, Candidate Mike Allan Hammah of the NDC, and Mr Ato Nkaabi, who represented the NPP candidate, Mr Samuel Owusu Agyei, pledged to help maintain peace in the area during and after the election.
