Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Jose Miguel Insulza on Monday denied that the United States does not support his re-election.
Insulza said "there is an intention to affect and damage" the election, adding that, "I have met many times with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and she has never told me that."
Insulza's remark was in response to a report of local daily El Mercurio, which said Sunday that the U.S. government was against Insulza's reelection because of his "bad management" of the current crisis in Honduras and for the return of Cuba to the OAS.
Insulza said his candidature for the elections scheduled for next year was "on good road" to the moment and "there is good news from most of the countries which have talked with me."
Chilean President Michel Bachelet on Monday also beat the rumor, saying his government "has not received any official nor non-official information about it."
According to Insulza, the rumor was also rejected by Thomas Shannon, deputy U.S. secretary of state for Latin America.
