Islamic Hamas movement spokesman Wednesday said Hamas does not expect anything new from the upcoming visit of U.S. peace envoy George Mitchell to the region.
Fawzi Barhoum, Gaza Hamas spokesman told Xinhua that the "foreign policy of the U.S. administration has not changed from the former administration's policy."
Mitchell will arrive in Israel on Wednesday night for advancing the stalled Middle East peace process. He is also scheduled to meet with Palestinian National Authority (PNA) officials.
"So far, Mitchell has just made statements and hopes, but he failed to achieve any progress to the Palestinian people," said Barhoum.
"Mitchell was not able to end the Israeli siege on Gaza and stop Israeli settlement," he added.
Mitchell has visited in the region last month and met with Israeli and Palestinian officials at the UN General Assembly, but he failed to convince Israel to stop settlement activities.
"Mitchell's visit to the region is just a type of protocol in order to show to the public that the United States is exerting efforts in the region, but on the ground he never carried anything new to the Palestinians," said Barhoum.
During his latest tour in the region, Mitchell is expected to meet Thursday with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday.
