Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa urged Colombia to do its bit to secure their border after opening three new military outposts on Monday.
The three new Ecuadorean outposts in Freddy Alcivar, El Palmar and Cantagallo in the Sucumbios province were set up to intensify control of irregular groups, according to the
Presidential Office.
Correa said in a speech the new military outposts were set to "guard national sovereignty."
He also said Colombia was absent in shared border surveillance while dozens of military
outposts had been established in the frontier by Ecuador and called on the Colombian government to "make efforts to guard its southern border."
Ecuador and Colombia share a frontier extending some 720 km, where guerilla groups,
paramilitaries and drug traffickers are rampant.
Ecuador has demanded several times that the Colombian government increase its security
presence at the frontier.
Both governments have recently reinstalled a defunct frontier committee to resume contact on border security one and a half years after they cut off ties.
