The former Nigerien prime minister, Oumarou Seyni, was elected the National Assembly's speaker, Niger's news agency reported on Thursday.
Seyni, president of the National Movement for Development (MNSD Nassara), a principal party within the presidential coalition, was elected on Wednesday by 109 deputies present on the benches of the National Assembly.
The new speaker assumed his position immediately after being elected.
Four parliamentary groups were formed, including the parliamentary group of MNSD Nassara (76 deputies); the parliamentary group of RSD Gaskiya, their allies PMT Albarka-UNI and Independents Lakal Kaney and Bonkaney (19 deputies); the parliamentary group of Independents (9 deputies); and the parliamentary group of RDP Jama'a (7 deputies).
