The Youth for Atta Mills Foundation (YAM-Foundation) on Monday appealed to the youth wings of both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from acts that will generate into violence.
It stressed the need for the two political parties to cherish the peace currently prevailing in the country and endeavor to ensure that order was maintained, particularly during the court hearings on the alleged irregularities in the December, 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary results.
A statement jointly signed by the National Chairman, Nii Brock, and Spokesperson, Nana Akuoku, which was issued to the GNA, said the Foundation reminded the two main political parties that peace was a necessary condition for economic development and prosperity.
“The youth of the NDC/NPP must reaffirm their commitment to sustain and safeguard the peace and harmony in the country and do more to prevent conflict and any unnecessary destruction.
It said the YAM-Foundation was extremely worried about recent happenings recorded in the country, including attacks on journalists and some innocent citizens after the declaration of the Presidential results, and the crowding at the Supreme Court by some aggrieved supporters of the NDC and NPP.
The statement stressed that such a development did not help in building a peaceful country and therefore must not be encouraged.
The Foundation commended the security agencies for their tact and professionalism that had contributed to the peaceful environment in the country after the 2012 General Election, and called on the leadership of the two parties to call their supporters to order.
It observed that their continued present could affect the final verdict of the Supreme Court, adding that it was important to allow the Supreme Court to work without any internal or external interference.
The statement said the YAM-Foundation was also worried by what it termed "the jostle for appointments" that had led to the emergence of syndicates and lobby groups in the ruling NDC party across the country.
The Foundation, in this regard, cautioned all leading members of the party "who are exploiting all avenues to crawl their way into President Mahama's cabinet to desist from doing so", saying that it was not a healthy practice but will only distract and create false impressions.
"Instead of lobbying for positions, NDC operatives should rather look out for avenues to help the President to deliver the BETTER GHANA AGENDA for the NDC administration to achieve the vision of the late President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.
