Global Sim card shipments are expected to reach over 5.8 million in 2020, according to the latest data from ABI Research. In 2016, global Sim card shipments lifted 3.9 percent year-on-year to 5.4 billion units, driven by continued advancement of LTE networks in China, Indonesia, and India. The moderate rise was tempered by stagnant results in the Americas and Western Europe, driven by the closure of Softcard, and high saturation levels.
Looking forward, national ID registration plans could have a negative impact on the market. ABI said there remains uncertainty in the market, fueled by the imminent introduction of pre-paid Sim ID registration in Poland, Hungary and the Middle East.
