Qualcomm has claimed an industry first, with a successful 5G data connection on a 5G modem chipset for mobile devices. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset delivered gigabit speeds and a data connection in the 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band. Additionally, Qualcomm previewed its first 5G smartphone reference design for the testing and optimization of power and form-factor constraints for the next generation of smartphone.
The 5G data connection demonstration took place in Qualcomm Technologies’ lab in San Diego. It used several 100 MHz 5G carriers, and in addition to the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset, the SDR051 mmWave RF transceiver integrated circuit. The demonstration used Keysight Technologies’ new 5G Protocol R&D Toolset and UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform.
Qualcomm first announced a 5G modem chipset last year. With the latest tests, 5G NR is expected to start commercialisation in 2019.
The company also announced separately an agreement to work with Verizon and Novatel Wireless on developing 5G NR in the mmWave bands of 28 GHz and 39 GHz. The technology development and over-the air field trials will be based on the 5G NR Release-15 specifications being developed by 3GPP.
The companies plan on delivering a common 5G NR mmWave technology platform for mobile and home broadband wireless access, supporting a 5G NR migration path for Verizon’s early 5G fixed wireless access deployments and trials based on the 5G-Technology Forum specifications.
