The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided a GHC 36,000 public place of convenience for the people of Obokrom, a suburb of Sekondi.
Obokrom, a community with over 1000 population could not boost of any place of convenience until this intervention by the USAID under
the Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene for Urban Poor (WASH-UP) project which is being implemented in Ghana by Cooperative Housing Foundation International, an NGO.
The overall objective of the project according to Mr. Anthony Kolb, Mission Director for Africa is to increase equitable access to improved water supply and basic sanitation for poor urban communities.
Mr. Kolb noted that Sekondi/Takoradi in particular and Ghana in general was undergoing transformation and therefore urged the
twin-city to brace itself for that bigger change, “I urge you all to be part of that development change that you can be proud of.”
Mr. George Yanore, Project Director, said the project was being implemented through a community-driven approach involving a broad range of stakeholders.
He noted that in addition to providing sanitation facilities, there was also capacity building and behavior change training
organized for water board members, partners, artisans, food vendors and children among others.
Alhaji Abdula Zakaria, Metropolitan Coordinating Director, called for commitment on the part of the community in ensuring that the
facility lasted.
He charged the management team assigned to the facility to ensure proper record keeping and be transparent and accountable so that regular maintenance of the facility could be guaranteed.
