Mr Ababu Afelibik, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), made the call in Bawku when the Bawku Chapter of the Association held its quadrennial delegates conference on the theme “Transforming societies through education: Agenda 2030-The role of the Teacher”.

Mr Afelibik urged the teachers to be professional and proactive in the dispensation of their duties by conforming to the laid down rules and regulation of the service, saying “if our children are to make any meaningful contribution to the development of the country, then we must prepare them well”.

The Chairman called on teachers to eschew the habit of drunkenness, lateness and absenteeism as those habits were detrimental to the development of education. The conference brought together local member chapters from the Binduri, Pusiga, Garu-Tempane and the Bawku West Districts of the Upper East Region to elect new executive members to see to the welfare of members.

Mr Joseph Azuntaaba, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, in an address read by Madam Rebecca Awuga, the Director in charge of Human Resource at the Municipal Education Directorate, urged young teachers to increase their monthly contributions to the Teacher’s Mutual Fund, as it would be paid to them with interest at the end of their service.

The Director commended the teachers for the effort they were making to uplift the falling standard of education in the area, and urged them to do more in order to produce qualified human resource for the country.
