The Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has launched a crime prevention campaign and unveiled security plans to deal with crimes within the Region.
The programme which is aimed at reducing crime and maintaining peace and harmony in communities is to take off simultaneously in all districts within the Region.
It is also to raise awareness in communities and to sensitise the general public on their role as citizens in helping the police to combat crime effectively.
Addressing the media at the launch, the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) David Nenyi Ampiah-Bennin said various outreach programmes would be undertaken at lorry stations, communities, schools, market places, churches and mosques under the campaign.
“Under the programme, the public would be educated on domestic violence, criminal investigations, procedures at the police station, road traffic regulations, human trafficking, information sharing, rights of victims and-suspects”, he said.
DCOP Ampiah-Bennin said available channels have been created for the public to lodge complaints of unprofessionalism against police officers as a way of ensuring sanity and professionalism in the Police Service.
He said the police would also periodically embark on intelligence led swoops at the hide outs and ghettos of criminals and increase police visibility on the roads to reduce road accidents.
“With the increase in highway accidents within the Region, the police is going to increase its visibility along the Accra- Cape Coast high way to manage traffic, check over-speeding and reckless driving. Police patrols have been increased from six to ten”, he said.
On the recent student clashes at the University of Cape Coast, DCOP Ampiah-Bennin said the Police would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute students who indulged in crime and urged parents to advise their children accordingly.
He urged the media to play a leading role in helping the public to understand, accept and enthusiastically participate in efforts at bringing down crime in the society.
DCOP Ampiah-Bennin assured the people of the Central Region maximum security and called for effective public engagement and cooperation in order to make the campaign a success.
He said the Police would continue to work assiduously without any fear or favour to ensure that criminal activities reduce drastically in the Region.
