The Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG) wants the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to take swift action against the growing influx of Cimco cement from Togo.
According to the Chamber, the surge seen over the past two months and concentrated in the Volta Region and Ada is already straining local producers and could soon spill into Accra.
Speaking to Citi Business News, CEO Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah warned that unchecked imports threaten the survival and competitiveness of Ghana’s cement industry.
“The greater proportion of this influx enters through Aflao, moving down to Ada and Tema, and gradually trickling into other parts of the country. What starts small quickly spreads widely. We have evidence that these products are being packaged and branded as Cimco cement.
“We raised the issue formally with the Honourable Minister, and we are assured that action is already being taken. We will continue to follow up,” he said.
The Chamber cautioned that failure to act could result in significant job losses, reduced local production, and a slowdown in industrial growth undermining the government’s broader industrialization agenda.
