Ghana's film industry has reached new heights with the premiere of "The Fisherman," the country's first official selection to the prestigious Venice Film Festival at the Accra Mall and West Hills Mall on Friday, September 19, 2025.
Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, the whimsical comedy tells the story of Atta Oko, a seasoned Ghanaian fisherman played by Ricky Adelayitor, who has spent years working hard with the dream of becoming the boat chief of his town.
However, when the mantle is passed to the arrogant and clueless son of the outgoing chief, Ajeezay (played by Fred Amugi's son in the film), Atta Oko is left feeling frustrated and disillusioned.
In a surprising turn of events, Atta Oko meets a talking fish, which he believes carries a traditional message for him due to his superstitious nature.
This encounter sets him on a new path when he teams up with three ambitious young friends: Kobina (William Lamptey), Shasha (Endurance Dzedzo), and Emmanuel (Kiki-Romi), who share his dream of forming their own boat crew.
Together, they embark on a journey to the city to secure a loan that will enable them to buy their own boat. As they navigate the challenges of city life, their adventure forms the core of the plot, showcasing themes of perseverance, friendship, and the pursuit of one's dreams.
The film boasts a talented cast, including Ricky Adelayitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi, alongside Nigerian actor Dulo Harris. Produced by Luu Vision Media's Kofi Owusu Afriyie and Korey Jackson.
