Ebenezer Laryea, a 27-year-old driver, on Tuesday
appeared before the Kade District Magistrate Court charged for stealing gold valued at GH12,100 belonging to his employer, a businesswoman.
The plea of Laryea was not taken and he was remanded in police custody until June 10, 2010.
Presenting the facts of the case, Police Inspector D.T. Nartey said sometime in 2008, the husband of the complainant engaged Laryea as a driver.
He said on April 1, this year the complainant put 3.2 pounds and seven carats of gold in a compartment of her private car.
The prosecutor said after parking the car in the house, the complainant forgot to remove the gold.
The following day, he said, the complainant travelled to Pramkese to transact a business in a different vehicle and on her return she learnt that Laryea moved the car in which she forgot the gold and later parked it.
When the complainant opened the compartment for the gold it was nowhere to be found.
The prosecutor said when the complainant and her husband questioned Laryea he denied any knowledge of the item.
The complainant later summoned Laryea before the leader of a Prayer Camp and further questioned him but he insisted that he had no knowledge of the gold.
On May 28, this year, the complainant reported the case to the Police and Laryea was later arrested.
In his caution statement to the police, he admitted stealing the gold and told the Police that he sold it to someone at Asuom for GH 3,200 and used part of the proceeds to buy a taxi cab.
The prosecutor said the Police were looking for the buyer of the gold to help them in their investigations.
He said the Police were also yet to retrieve the taxi bought by Laryea with the gold money.
