President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging the international community to take decisive steps to protect innocent lives.
Addressing the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, the President said the world could not continue to look on as civilians were subjected to indiscriminate attacks. “The crimes in Gaza must stop. The indiscriminate bombing of civilians, the denial of humanitarian aid, and the collective punishment of innocent people cannot continue. We cannot continue to measure whose lives matter and whose do not,” he stated.
He accused the global community of failing the people of Gaza through silence and inaction. “The silent complicity of the international community has emboldened those who commit these atrocities. We cannot normalise cruelty. We cannot normalise hatred. We cannot normalise xenophobia and racism,” he stressed.
President Mahama said the violence undermined the very principles on which the UN was founded, noting that peace, justice, and humanity should remain at the heart of global governance.
He called on member states to recommit to peacebuilding and dialogue, saying that sustainable solutions to the conflict could only be achieved through political will and compromise.
The Ghanaian leader further pledged that Ghana would continue to align itself with international efforts to promote peace and justice in the region.
He added that protecting vulnerable populations should be the priority of all nations, regardless of geopolitical interests. “When we choose which lives to value and which to ignore, we erode our humanity,” he said.
