The 2025 Local Conference of Youths (LCOY) Ghana, a climate advocacy group, has launched the Ghana Youth Climate Action Roadmap (GYCAR), a blueprintl for youth-led initiatives that align with national climate priorities and open pathways for greater youth involvement in climate action and policy-making.
The Roadmap, unveiled at the University of Ghana during the fifth edition of LCOY, was co-developed with over 15 youth organisations, regional consultations, and input from government agencies including the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
It is also aligned with Ghana's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
In an interview with the GNA at the Conference, Mr. Noah Bugre, LCOY Ghana Convenor, said the document would help consolidate years of youth-led climate statements while bridging gaps between donor priorities, government action, and youth-driven projects.
"We are creating pathways that allow young people to not only design climate projects, but also to get the support and funding to implement them. This Roadmap ensures that if youth claim to have created 1,000 jobs through climate action, we will have proof and monitoring systems to back it," Mr. Bugre explained.
He stressed that the success of the GYCAR would depend on government recognition and support, as well as the commitment of development partners to fund youth-led initiatives that align with the roadmap.
"We want this to become a national document that both the government and development agencies can support, so young people across the regions can take it up and run with it," he added.
The conference also saw the co-development of Ghana's National Youth Climate Statement (NYS), which will represent the voices of Ghanaian youth at COP30 later this year.
The 2025 LCOY Ghana convened more than 450 participants, including youth leaders, policymakers, development partners, and civil society actors, reaffirming its role as the country's foremost youth-led climate platform within the global UNFCCC process.
Mr. Bugre commended the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for supporting the production of the roadmap and called on other partners to assist in disseminating it across all regions.
"Youth organisations have proven to be one of the key driving forces in Ghana's climate response. With the Ghana Youth Climate Action Roadmap, we are providing the structure, partnerships, and accountability to make youth climate action stronger, coordinated, and impactful," he stated.
Mr. Issifu Seidu, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, in a speech read on his behalf, praised the launch of the Ghana Youth Climate Action Roadmap, describing it as a blueprint that reflects the ambitions of young people across all 16 regions.
The Minister noted that GYCAR would serve as a partner framework to align youth priorities with national climate strategies as the country advances towards COP30.
