St Mary’s Senior High School in Accra has launched its student-run newsletter, dubbed Merries Wi-Fi, a platform for the young student girls to write freely, question and innovate.
It also provides the opportunity for the students to explore and hone their writing and journalism skills beyond the traditional school system.
“I strongly believe that education should not be confined to the four walls of the classroom.
It must provide opportunities for our students to exhibit their skills, talents and creativity in diverse ways,” the Headmistress of the school, Philomena Owusu-Ansah, said during the launch of the school’s periodical.
Beyond recording the achievements of the students and the school, the monthly periodical will also offer institutions, companies and partners an avenue to advertise their goods and services.
It will also help to strengthen the bond between the school and the wider community.
“It will be a bridge linking the past, present, and future of St. Mary’s, carrying the voices of our young girls to the world, nurturing critical thinking, promoting reading, and building enterprise,” the headmistress added.
The idea of Merries Wi-Fi was conceived by the headmistress as a platform to connect students, alumni, staff, and friends of St Mary’s in a shared space of ideas, stories, and opportunities.
It is with this in mind that the school’s Read Wide Society and the graduates of the Class of 2025 brought it to life.Reactions
The National President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Agbe Carbonu, who chaired the ceremony to launch the newsletter, expressed his admiration for the initiative.
He explained that it was no longer a world where certificates were the only means of survival, but there should be avenues to encourage and develop talents.
