Building Africa - Documentary Film
Seminar Information
How do our public buildings represent and shape our politics?
Building Africa is a documentary film that addresses this question, by telling five stories about how buildings change politics in Africa. Each one is told from the point of view of ordinary people from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, the DRC and Ethiopia.
* The South African story looks at how an apartheid-era prison became the highest court in the land.
* The Zimbabwean story asks, why is the Chinese government building a new parliament for the country?
* The Ghanaian story explains why parents and pupils build their own schools.
* The DRC story describes the politics you can find inside a football stadium.
* And the Ethiopian story asks, which building in Addis Ababa represents the heart of Africa?
Building Africa is a film made by Julia Gallagher and Sunil Pun, with Innocent Batsani-Ncube, Kuukuwa Manful, Joanne Tomkinson and Daniel Mulugeta from the African State Architecture project at SOAS, University of London.
The African State Architecture project was funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 772070).
