As part of its 21 Days of Y'ello Care initiative, MTN Ghana recently visited Opportunity Industrialization Technical Institute to engage with students and staff. Speaking at the event, MTN Ghana CEO Mr. Steven Blewett emphasized the importance of technical vocational skills in driving economic development. "Technical vocation is where the future lies," he noted. "That's where the jobs come from." Mr. Blewett highlighted the critical role that institutions like Opportunity Industrialization Technical Institute played in equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in the workforce.
During a tour of the school, which included a visit to the Motor vehicle mechanics workshop, Block Laying and Concreting Department, and the Fashion Studio, Mr. Blewett expressed his admiration for the technical skills being taught to students. He emphasized that these skills were essential for Ghana's economic growth and development, noting that "if we want to continue to grow our economy, if we want to have a 24-hour economy, we need people with these skills." While acknowledging the role of digital technology in showcasing these skills to the world, Mr. Blewett stressed that AI could complement but not replace the human creativity and technical expertise that students were learning at the institute. He also highlighted the importance of removing the stigma associated with technical skills and recognizing the value of tradespeople in building the economy.
Mr. Mawuli Sogbe, the proprietor of Opportunity Industrialization Technical Institute, explained that the school had been in existence since 1970 and currently had a student population of 1,506. The institute offered eight different programs, including catering and hospitality, masonry, fashion designing, and plumbing. As part of its collaboration with MTN Ghana's 21 Days of Y'ello Care initiative, the school sewed 283 school uniforms for some deprived basic schools. Mr. Sogbe emphasized the importance of technical education in equipping students with skills that would make them employable or self-employed. He also highlighted the need for collaboration between industries and technical institutions to ensure that students were well-prepared for the workforce.
The visit to Opportunity Industrialization Technical Institute was part of MTN Ghana's 21 Days of Y'ello Care initiative, an annual staff volunteer program that aimed to make a positive impact in communities across the country. This year's event promised to be even more impactful, with activities taking place throughout Ghana, demonstrating MTN's commitment to giving back to the communities that supported its business.
