Despite the fact that the community is host to a national heritage site that attracts thousands of visitors every year, its health facility grapples with basic needs impacting prompt and efficient delivery of services.
Speaking during a donation exercise by ASA Savings and Loans Limited, the Physician Assistant in charge of the centre, Abigail Glover, revealed that the facility, which serves over 2,500 residents, also lacks adequate staff to cater for its clients.
ASA Savings and Loans presented 20 plastic chairs, two hospital beds with mattresses, 10 pedal dustbins, six mops and buckets, 20 pairs of utility gloves, 16 bedsheets, two drip stands, and six sets of brooms and brushes.
She explained that the centre attended to about 280 patients weekly, a situation that often overwhelmed the limited staff and resources.
According to her, the pressure intensified during national and cultural events such as the Emancipation Day celebrations, when large numbers of visitors travelled to Assin Manso to participate in the commemorative activities.
“The workload becomes enormous during the emancipation celebrations, as the number of visitors increases, yet we have to manage with the same limited equipment and staff,” she lamented.
Mrs Glover disclosed that the centre had only three Blood Pressure (BP) apparatus serving all its divisions.
She added that the centre did not have a children's ward, so they had to accommodate the children with the elderly patients.
She called for support to equip the centre’s under-resourced laboratory and to add a children’s ward to the facility.
She thanked ASA Savings and loans for the gesture and called on philanthropists, corporate institutions and the government to come to the centre’s aid, stressing that “healthcare delivery in Assin Manso must reflect the area’s national importance.”
The Assin South District Director of Health Services, Suzzy Bill, also described the gesture as timely, explaining that the centre had been grappling with acute staff shortages.
“We are preparing for a peer review exercise, but the truth is that our staff strength does not match the patient load,” she said.
She added that several staff members were currently on leave, making it difficult for the few remaining to attend to the large number of patients each day.
The Area Manager of ASA Savings and Loans, Central Division, Gideon Asante Yeboah, said the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on good health and well-being.
