In a bid to boost Thailand's domestic spending, the government plans to ask shops and department stores nationwide to provide a 10 to 20 percent discount for consumers, deputy Premier Korbsak Sabhavasu said Thursday.
This measure would be done after the government manages to give some 2,000 baht (59 U.S. dollars) in cash to 9-million low-income earners, The Nation newspaper's website reported.
The government would give the 2,000 baht cash handout to the 9- million people via cheques by submitting through post, said Korbsak.
The government hopes the 10-20 percent discounts in all shops and department stores would help boost spending and discourage people from saving the money in bank accounts, he said.
